Partnership and New Technologies: OCI working with public institutions to innovate on production processes

OCI believes in innovation at every level of business. OCI’s most recent project involves R&D-phase implementation of a robotic system for butchering crab, with critical parts created through 3D printing. The Canadian Centre for Fisheries Innovation (CCFI), College of the North Atlantic (CNA), and the Marine Institute’s Centre for Aquaculture and Seafood Development (CASD) represent the range of institution partners involved. Mechanical engineers from both the Marine Institute and the College of the North Atlantic oversaw the installation of this new machinery at OCI’s plant in St. Lawrence.

As an originating partner in the development of this technology, OCI enjoys exclusive usage of this machinery for a defined duration. Other applications, including a proprietary process for the removal of crabmeat from the shells, are also in development.
