Grand Banks

A portion of North American continental shelf in the Atlantic Ocean, it lies southeast and south of Newfoundland. The shape of the ocean floor, plus the mixing of the Labrador Current with the warmer Gulf Stream waters lifts nutrients to the surface and created one of the richest fishing grounds in the world. John Cabot first reported the banks in 1498, and in 1977 Canada extended its fishing claim to encompass most of the area. It has since given limited fishing rights to other countries.
