Ocean Choice International Announces Retirement of Loyola Sullivan, appointment of Carey Bonnell as new Vice President of Sustainability and Engagement

January 12, 2018

After a long and distinguished career, Loyola Sullivan, has decided it is time to retire. Loyola has been a valued member of our management team for the past 7 years and will finish up with Ocean Choice International (OCI) this Fall.

“Loyola has been instrumental in advancing the priorities of the company on many fronts, including the sustainability of our resources through Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certifications and fisheries improvement projects, the interaction and leadership with our various industry associations on key issues, and building strong relationships with other industry players, both levels of government and other stakeholders,” explained Martin Sullivan, CEO of Ocean Choice International. “We thank him for his contribution and wish him well as he prepares for retirement.”

In conjunction with Loyola’s retirement, we are pleased to announce the appointment of Carey Bonnell as Vice President of Sustainability and Engagement. This will be a senior management position, reporting to Martin and Blaine Sullivan.

In this role, Carey will have leadership responsibility for all sustainability and resource management matters, the company’s high-level innovation agenda and for external stakeholder engagement. He will actively participate with all stakeholders in advancing the strategic priorities of the company in these areas. He will also be responsible to ensure that our main seafood resources are sustainable for the long term and work towards achieving our corporate objective to have all our fisheries third-party accredited, which is aligned with the priorities of our worldwide customer base.

Carey has held a broad range of senior management positons in the fishing industry and has been a very active contributor to the growth of the fisheries sector. Carey most recently held a senior management position with the Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland as the Head of the School of Fisheries. He has also been Managing Director of the Canadian Centre for Fisheries Innovation and held senior fisheries leadership positions with the Government of Nunavut. Carey has also been very active in various committees on fishery matters at both the Provincial and Federal levels, and is a current Board member of Innovate NL. He has a Master of Marine Studies in Fisheries and Resource Management as well as an undergraduate degree from Memorial University of Newfoundland.

“Carey comes from a fishing family and is very passionate about the fishery and Newfoundland & Labrador,” added Blaine Sullivan, COO of Ocean Choice International. “We look forward to his contribution to our company and the fishing industry in our Province.” Carey will start with OCI on February 12 and over the next several months will work closely with Loyola to transition his responsibilities.
